Frequently asked questions

Why Choose Mr Hopkins?

He is one of Bristol’s leading independent providers of UGI surgical services, putting patients at the heart of the service and playing a key role in ensuring access to quality healthcare for everyone. He offers services in Bristol’s highest rated private, and NHS, hospitals. He uses the same governance and accountability procedures in both his private practice and the NHS, so he can be measured by the same standards of success.

What surgical procedures does Mr Hopkins offer?

Mr Hopkins is an advance laparoscopic surgeon, who treats all aspects of biliary, reflux and hernia conditions with keyhole surgery in 99% of patients. This is particularly for Cholecystectomy or Gallbladder Surgery, Anti-reflux or Hiatal Surgery and all routine hernias. Complex abdominal wall hernias usually require specialist open reconstruction techniques.

What are the waiting times to be seen and treated?

You can expect to be seen in the Nuffield clinic within 2 weeks of requesting a private appointment, and within 6 weeks at Emerson’s Green. Mr Hopkins does not have a waiting list for most private surgical procedures once you have agreed an operation plan. But it does take between 4-6 weeks, on average, for pre-op assessment, any bloods tests required and booking a theatre date. More specialist tests can add an additional 1 -4 weeks to arrange. Within the NHS waiting times are unfortunately likely to be much longer, with up to 4 months to be seen in clinic and up to 12 months for an specialist test or operation, currently.

How do I arrange to consult with Mr Hopkins?

For private surgery please contact my Nuffield secretary, at the number on the contacts page, or fill out the contact form. Alternatively some health  insurance providers have direct booking for Mr Hopkins clinics via their own linked provider websites, please check with your insurance company. For NHS referrals your GP must submit a standard referral form on the NHS electronic referral service, and you will then be sent a ‘Choose and Book’ reference to select Mr Hopkins’ NHS services.

What are the costs to private treatment with Mr Hopkins?

Mr Hopkins publishes transparent fee rates, and typical operative fees, with PHIN - the government mandated Private Healthcare Information Network. He is fee assured with all major insurance companies, so you will not pay any extra to see or be treated by Mr Hopkins within your own policy conditions. For self-pay patients when you contact my secretary to arrange an appointment you will be given a quote for the exact first outpatient appointment, which is currently between £175 and £245. You can also ask for the package price for surgery procedures – which includes all operation and follow up costs at the Nuffield or PPG.
